Excellent food. The mackerel salad is great and anything seasonal is always worth checking out. I absolutely recommend the meat and cheese board with the red wine, especially on a sunny day. It's a great spot to sit outside, however it can still be a bit cold.
I love this place and have done for years, I'm so glad it's still going strong (although slightly disappointed that it's no longer a hidden gem at the same time)
My only grievance with this establishment is that they haven't changed their menu in yeeeeeeeeears. Yes, they have specials and yes, you could argue the 'if it's not broke' angle but there's only so many times I can get excited about the homemade beans.
Actually, the door being constantly opened with no insulation also takes away from the experience as, the place is always cold & not near as cosy as the 'your gran's sitting room' vibe would lead you to expect.
The Cake Cafe is set a small courtyard full of quaint tables and a wooden shelter decorated with broken discs, piano keys and bamboo.
Although a tad cramped, the place was an instant hit with my friends and I. You'd easily forgive the lack of space due to the amount of people there at peak times, so best try grab an early lunch or risk missing a seat.
Since I'm not a fan of coffee, I asked the waitress how decadent the "Extra rich" hot chocolate genuinely was. She hesitated. I knew then it was for me.
Our tea and hot chocolate came in china teacups (as expected) accompanied by a big old-fashioned teapot. The Cake Cafe seems like a place where a person could go in all kinds of vintage dresses and not look one bit out of place. You could go there in tweed and read newspapers all day and feel right at home. In fact, I recommend it.
