Applying to graduate schemes at the moment and go a question from Kerry Group asking: Please tell us about the best tasting meal you have ever experience? Well they may have got more than they bargained for opening that flood gate. My answer below.
This is my favourite question asked on any graduate application!
The best meal I have ever eaten was at a restaurant in Dublin named Featherblade. Whilst living in Dublin I was made aware of this restaurant by a friend who had lived there for a while, but you want to know about flavour not the decor so I'll get directly to the food.
The menu here revolves regularly and only ever holds a few options. 3 starters, 3 deserts, choice of 2 mains, 5 sides and 5 sauces. My choice was straight to the main ordering a Featherblade steak, Sweet potato wedges and pepper corn sauce. I prefer my steak cooked medium rare and they cook it to perfection. Outside crisp, inside pink and a little juice running from the steak. Sweet potato wedges are similar in that they have a crunch to the outside but soft and perfect throughout. The sauce comes in its own pot which I enjoy as it can drown the flavour of the steak if poured over it directly. The steak is a 9 ounce steak so not the biggest steak you will ever enjoy but so good I found myself cutting it into smaller and smaller pieces so as to make it last. I believe there are two reasons people eat and it can be to just get full or to truly enjoy the flavour of a meal. They aren't mutually exclusive and this meal combines both perfectly. It is seasoned exceptionally and I have never added salt or pepper to my steak here. After taking my time to enjoy each bite of the meal my colleague and I both agreed it was amazing. The steak is cooked perfectly, seasoned well and the care that is taken with it is evident throughout. The small menu to me shows they know what they do well and are content to specialise in this area.
We were offered dessert menus and came to the conclusion we needed more steak, so we ordered the exact same thing again, plus a braised short rib and a skewer of prawns. If in Dublin I will always go to Featherblade. I recently went to Dublin to see the comedian Chris Rock and was far more excited for Featherblade than I was for the €70 comedy show I was to attend. I ask them on social media almost monthly to open a restaurant in Cork and if gaining this graduate position, I'll be asking them to come to Tralee also.
Cassidy's in Tralee is also wonderful as a local selection.
Although I’m a beef farmers wife I’d never heard of a cut called “Featherblade “. The waitress was very helpful in describing the 2 types of meat available on the menu & how it was best enjoyed. All four of us went for the Featherblade “surfedup “ which meant it was served with a skewer of 5 shelled, deveined & garlic marinated prawns on top !!! Wow !!!! We tried all of the side orders which were all amazing ... particularly the creamed spinach & broccoli with roasted garlic .... We had a litre of the house red which was very good & finished off sharing the sticky toffee dessert with ginger ice cream .. to die for . A small , friendly restaurant with amazing food ,quick service ... couldn’t fault anything . First time to visit but definitely not the last 😊🥩👍
Absolutely love this place! Went with a crew for lunch last Friday. Brilliant atmosphere, staff are great, and food was so quick. We ordered the featherblade, burger, mac 'n cheese, creamed spinach and fries. Amazing!! The featherblade lives up to all the reviews and the burger rivals any I've tasted. Get as many sides as you can eat, they're divine! We got a couple of cocktails too - would really recommend the aperol and the old fashioned. This place is a gem. Look forward to going back
