Came to Dublin for a business award trip and Matt’s was recommended by taxi driver. Did not disappoint. Told the waiter to “surprise me” and had mix of crab claws and mussels. This place rivals any Southern California seafood restaurant like Mastro’s or Geoffery’s Malibu. Bartender, waiter, staff all brilliant!!

First rate experience. Cannot wait to go back. In Dublin this weekend, enjoying a quiet pint near St Stephen's, booked at short notice on a Trip Advisor whim... Wow!! On entry we felt we (my Dad and 2 brothers, no girls) were a bit too casual, given the super-cool decor and pianist. We were greeted and treated throughout our experience with the utmost care, respect and attention. We had oysters, chowder, mussels, hake, tuna, and good old fish & chips. All faultless. The food, wine, service are all first rate. I cannot recommend this place highly enough and will definitely be back. Book it, you won't regret it!

What a great place! Flew to Dublin for the day just for oysters, definitely picked the best place! The oysters were amazing, & so was the rest of the meal. The staff are great too, couldn’t do enough for us.

Last minute booking on bank holiday Sunday and they managed to accommodate the 2 of us. We had the seafood platter with a bottle of prosecco and it was incredible! The 2 types of oysters are delicious, especially with the soy based sauce. Would definitely recommend and can't wait to visit this place again.

Loved it! Took ages to decide what to have. Went for fish pie, which was spectacular. Family had venison, scallops, fish n chips and one of the specials. We all enjoyed and the staff were excellent! Will be back.

Would be here very infrequently however the barman always seems to recognise me (ish) not sure if it's a shtick but more than once he hasremmebered my previous order. Not sure if luck or undiscovered savant. Either way the food is delicious if a bit pricey and they have a good wine list

The last time I was here was about 3 years ago, and unfortunately didn't love the place at all, though I can't for the life of me remember why. Extremely happy we decided to return for a pre-match lunch

-Location: Pembroke Street, Dublin 2. Perfect spot for a pre-match bite to eat
-Welcome: We were the second table to arrive into the building for 11am lunch, the host recognising us from previous occasions and seated us in the booth, which felt like the best seat in the house
-Atmosphere: Entirely different ambiance for lunch than dinner. Light, non-stuffy, with classical-jazz playing in the background
-Clientele: Moreso upmarket. All rugby followers at this time of day
-Decor: I didn't appreciate how incredible the furnishings were when I had previously been here. Seeing the place in sunlight was a real treat, with the stained-glass windows standing out beautifully
-Menu/food: A lot of choice for both fish and meat lovers.
-Drinks: Prosecco on tap... Need I say more? Apparently they pull a good Guinness too.
-Service/Waiters: extremely accommodating and friendly.
-What we got: We began with a cheese board, perfect size for four to share, accompanied by tasty artisan crackers. Two went for the open crab, shrimp and avocado salad. And the other two the burger. The salad was massive, tasty, and left nothing to desire. More prawns than one would usually expect. I got to try a morsel of the burger, which was also delicious.
-Pricing: Depending on what you usually would go for the pricing is quite variable. The salad was €16.95 and burger €12.95, both worth it.
-Recommend for: Lunch pre aviva fixture! Will definitely return to try the dinner again though

I booked Matt the Threshers before the game on Saturday with my family - and what a pre-match gem it was.
As the match was so early it was hard to decide what to eat as it was between that awkward lunch - breakfast time; however the menu is so extensive it covers all!
The inside is AMAZING! With a huge open bar and an extensive number of levels. I was so impressed by the decor; Im still going on about it! We were seated in a booth which I would strongly recommend. Its comfy, secluded yet facing the bar where I presume becomes very busy at night.
Isolde De Brún and I were in our ELEMENT as we soon discovered they had prosecco on tap.
We began with prosecco and a cheese board to share, as we couldnt decide from the huge menu.
In the end I went for the burger - which was extremely tasty. I find burgers, although so simply made, many restaurants cant get them right! But was very impressed.
The experience overall was amazing, and we will definitely be back before the next match; for food or even for drinks!
The service was attentive and friendly, and the timing of the food/ drinks were impressively well timed.
Cant wait to re-visit Matt the Threshers hopefully soon!

Review 12 of the 12 reviews of Christmas !!
The final review 🎄🎄🎄Aisling Byrne
I went to mat the thrashers last night. The place was so busy when we arrived so we were half an hour late to be seated. The wait was worth it as the food was delicious.
We went for the Christmas menu for 40 euro and was it was very good.If you like jacket potatoes which were golden wonders this is the place to go. I had mussels to start and the hake for my main and they were both lovely .
I had the lemon moose for desert that was so refreshing and ended my meal very well.
I would recommend Matt the threshers to anyone who loves fish .

Just ate here tonight with my boyfriend and parents thanks enormously to a zomato voucher, the perfect place to sit out the storm!

The welcome is warm and friendly, really really nice happy and efficient staff! Lovely decor on the inside and a really calm, welcoming atmosphere.

The wine selection is great, a lot of unusual grapes that I hadn't heard of before but a great selection and standard enough prices.

I had the chowder for starters, delicious, creamy and flavoursome with lots of high quality white fish. My boyfriend had the fish cake with a poached egg, in my opinion this was the best starter, it was served with a lovely bright, well balanced hollandaise. My dad had the soup of the day which was fennel and (I think) courgette- he enjoyed it but found it a little over seasoned.

For mains there is a nice selection on the menu but also 5 or 6 specials on the blackboard, a small improvement would have been if there was a board that we could have seen these (there was a board but we couldn't see it from our seats) as we found it hard to remember what was said by the lovely waitress! Myself and my mum both ordered the monkfish special, it was AMAZING!!!! Served with a shellfish sauce, the portion was huge and the flavours were wonderful. It came with a big boiled in it's skin potato, I personally like something a little more exciting done with my potato but it was fine.

The 2 lads went for fish and chips, again, very generous portions with loads of fish and very tasty.

Overall would definitely recommend this restaurant, for the food as much as the wonderful staff! At the end of the meal my mum said "that was the nicest experience I've had for a long time"

Special thanks to the man at the front who braved the winds to get us a taxi so we didn't have to stand out!!! That's service if I ever seen it!!!

What an experience! My friend received a voucher from zomato and took me here on Friday night.

Paul made our night so special! We got a pâté and the scrimp cocktail to start. The pâté was the nicest I've had in a while. For mains we shared the crab claws that came in a lovely light sauce and the scampi and chips. Crab claws was definitely my favourite out of the two. We shared the pavlova for dessert, very refreshing.

Service was very attentive and the place had a lovely atmosphere. Felt like I was in a cruise-ship. Can't wait to come back or even just pop in for a drink as the bar area seems like a nice sport too.

I enjoyed lunch here recently with two friends thanks to Zomato. The food was delicious and there was a lovely atmosphere for lunchtime. Some famous faces who have dined here include Michelle Obama! I enjoyed the scampi and chips as a main but the fish and chips is a more reasonably priced dish. The mussels were good to share as a starter. The service was attentive and overall we thoroughly enjoyed our experience.

I was lucky to be presented with a voucher by Matt the Thresher. I went with 3 others on a quite Sunday afternoon for lunch. The decor is unique with a classic design and with a warm ambience. The staff was very friendly and gave us a detailed descriptions of the specials.
A guest and I ordered seafood chowder; it had an intense taste but it lacks of fish pieces. The bread on the side was fantastic and fresh.
For main course we chose the mussels and they were divine, juicy and fresh. The wine sauce was exceptional.
For dessert I shared with my partner warm brownie which was tasty and not too heavy.
One of my guest chose the courgette and mushroom soup of the day and she was delighted and pleasantly surprised with her choice.
My partner ordered the fish cake which was delicate but yet full of flavours.
Both had battered fish and chips which they both enjoyed. Chips had a rustic taste and the fish was really nice.
Overall great experience and high quality food for a gastro pub!!

This place definitely deserves a 5 !!!

Went here a couple of times in 2012 and thought the food was amazing. We returned in December 2014 with my future parents in law for dinner and the food was just as good as I remembered. What I really like about here is that its not like some other places where standards slip with popularity which I think went through the roof after Michelle Obama had lunch here?!

We booked for early evening not long before Christmas and the place was packed. We had the table for just over two hours. Even though the place was packed you didn't feel like it was. The tables are well spaced out so it still felt quite private.

I had the lobster and prawn cocktail, followed by a tuna burger (Which was their special that day) and finished off with a chocolate trio mousse.

The seafood specials change daily with whatever the catch of the day is but the food is always fresh.

If you're looking for great seafood, service and atmosphere you should definitely try here.

Was here last week for some lunch. Really impressive, great presentation, nice atmosphere and delicious food to go with it. It had one of the best scampi dishes I have ever tasted, it is pricey enough but worth it for a treat.

Such a beautiful seafood restaurant. Bedded in the heart of the city with an air of elegance about it. Staff are courteous and attentive. The seafood is all locally sourced and so fresh. I got the mussels to start followed by the hake, all seasoned perfectly. Would recommend to all!

Only the best things to report! The service is top notch. Our waiter was a delight, great craic with me asking him to recite the specials several times! I had the pate and plaice and it was unbelievable. We all cleared our plates. I would recommend this restaurant if you like your seafood great choice and overall an outstanding experience.

I love fish so this has to be one of my favourite restaurants in dublin. I've visited the birdhill restaurant on a number of occasions also really good. The staff are lovely the fish is the best value as the quality is impeccable but the prices are reasonable!

Accidentally ordered the dressed white crab meat on brown bread instead of the crab meat salad but it was lovely. Typical crab meat on brown bread dish with a nice glass of white wine. Would like to come back and taste some of the hot seafood dishes. Lovely spot, love the decor and a great location

A great setting for dinner. The fish is on display on the counter and arrives promptly. Being slightly out of the city centre there is a calmer feel to the restaurant. Food is of a high quality.

A high quality seafood bar/restaurant on Pembroke street. I ordered the fish an chips (boring I know!!), looking around I wish I was more adventurous and got the seafood platter which looked amazing. The fish and chips did not disappoint but I felt that it wasn't a dish that really would make the place stand out!! The waiter was really helpful in selecting a bottle of wine to compliment the meal and he made a great choice.

I would definitely return as there is numerous dishes on the menu which I would like to try, I can certainly see why it has gained the reputation as one of the top seafood restaurants in Dublin.

Great atmosphere. Pay special attention to the daily fresh fish specials. I had fresh Hake with homemade tartar sauce, potatoes and salad. Flavors and seasoning nicely balanced. Fish well cooked.

Having been to Matt the Thresher a few times, we returned again with my parents, for a mid week dinner & catch up before they headed away on holidays. Luckily we had a table booked as the place was busy enough, we had a nice circular booth in the middle of the main floor area. Matt the Thresher calls itself a bar & seafood restaurant, probably its more gastropub than restaurant… the space feels light and airy while still retaining a warmth with the lighting, fireplace and muted colours throughout.

Seafood and shellfish is the thing here and dominates the menu, although there are plenty of other options on the menu including steaks, bangers & mash, a beef & Guinness pie. We shared a starter of Sautéed Prawn Tails in White Wine, Chilli, Garlic & Herb (€16.95) – this is a main dish so perfect as a starter for 2 or 3. There were 2 other starters – Roaring Water Bay Mussels (€8.94) and a Dublin Bay prawn cocktail with langoustines (€13.95).

The prawns were delicious, really tasty – the sauce was the perfect balance of garlicness with the heat of chilli – I’d happily have this again! The mussels were very good although some were quite small. The prawn cocktail served in the traditional martini style glass was also excellent, such pretty presentation too. There was meant to be a garlic bread with the mussels but we requested regular toasted bread instead, this didn’t arrive though so we had to ask again, it finally arrived right when we were finishing up the starters.

Onto the mains, 3 of us ordered the lobster special (€21.95), half a lobster served cold with crab on top and a salad. A couple of sides of chips to accompany it. The other main was one of the fish specials that day, Turbot (€28.95). Both dishes were hard to fault, fresh seafood, great tasting…I just love lobster and will always order it on a menu, the necessary tools came with the dish so you can scoop out all the lovely lobster hidden deep inside!

After all of that food, there was no room for dessert! We had enjoyed a bottle of Saint Veran (€44.50) and a bottle of Zinfandel (€26.50) with our meal. The wine list is pretty decent, good choices at different price points, and there’s also a full bar – beers, spirits (including a good choice in Gin which is always nice to see!). Our total bill came to €224.70 for the 4 of us, this also included a pre-dinner drink.

Matt the Thresher is a good spot, there’s no doubt it is on the pricey side for what in all senses appears to be a casual dining experience but the quality is there. Service can be a little hit and miss, slow at times, but the waiting staff are generally friendly and knowledgeable. Overall Matt the Thresher is a place we return to from time to time and we will continue to do so. I prefer going with a few people, family or friends rather than just a 2. Although if its just the 2 of us its nice to sit at the bar. For sunny days or warmer evenings there’s a nice terrace area to the front also… although coming into winter the inside with fireplace is probably more desirable!
